Alzheimer's: Wrongfully Diagnosed?

Updated: May 9, 2022

My mother was in her early 60s when she started to “disappear” into her world. She wouldn’t hear us or shake her head and go off into another room. This was strange because we have always been a very close-knit family. And my mother was the fabric that held that together. So when she started shutting herself off from the rest of us, we knew something was amiss.

Her hearing had gotten progressively worse over the last few years. Her tinnitus had gotten wrong. And, what was once a slight buzzing in the ears was now a loud frequency that took over her life. She had refused to get hearing aids because they were too expensive, and the thought of having yet another audible frequency in her ears was a nightmare.

My sisters and I were at a loss as to what to do. She couldn’t hear us, and she was slipping away. We seriously considered taking ASL classes so we could communicate with her again. Finally, I had had enough. I insisted that we go to the audiologist and get fitted for hearing aids.

In the doctor’s office, my neuroscience brain kicked back in. When he told me, I was kicking myself for not thinking about it sooner. Her hearing had gotten so bad that the buzzing in the ears was the brain searching for stimulation. It started to create its frequency, hoping to stimulate the neurons. Because her hearing had gotten so bad, the brain was not getting stimulated by sound anymore. When something in the body does not get used, it will atrophy and eventually shut down. The doctor told me that her hearing was almost at zero. Non-existent. Then, he started to cry. He said that so many people in this world are wrongfully diagnosed with Dementia and Alzheimer's and just left to get lost in their silent world. When in actuality, all these people need are hearing aids. With the hearing aids, the brain will get the stimulation it needs, neurons will fire, and the brain will wake up.

This is not the case for all, but it could be helpful for some. If your elder seems to be slipping away into their quiet world and then gets diagnosed with either of these diseases, I would highly recommend going to an audiologist and seeing if they need hearing aids. It could save their lives and give more life to them.

If you know someone with tinnitus, it is essential to fuel their brain with healthy fats and insist on daily relaxation. Stress is a major contributing factor to neurons not firing correctly.

A great way to relax is one of my MP3 meditations.
